The Festive Season

Croc Valley Camp in December is gearing up for the holidays. The rains have come and the valley is turning a beautiful green – that’s why we call it emerald season! It’s a great time of year to visit, whether for the holidays or just a relaxing break. The animals have begun having babies, and you are sure to see baby impala, monkeys, and even some lion cubs if you’re lucky – and they’re adorable. Our wonderful staff is getting ready for the festive season also. Christmas in Mfuwe is always a fantastic time and the lodges go all […]

Waiting for the Rain

Welcome to Croc Valley Camp in November. As we wait patiently for the rains to arrive, some of the wildlife is not as patient. Everything is dusty and dry and the animals are having more trouble finding food, so the monkeys are getting creative and scavenging around our campsites! We always tell everyone to lock up their food securely, especially at this time of year, so the vervets, baboons, and even elephants aren’t tempted to raid supplies. It’s just part of being in the bush in Africa – no fences, just the wild experience. The hippos are out at night […]

Croc Valley in the Dry Season

October is here! The dry season has is in full swing and water holes have dried up in the park, so wildlife moves toward the river to drink and cool off. It is a great time of year for wildlife viewing – the bush thins out and animals are seen much more clearly. The temperature is going up also, reaching 40 degrees C/100 degrees F many days during the afternoons. It is a dry heat – the humidity doesn’t arrive until the rains start in November. Mornings are pleasant and our guests have reported some fantastic sightings during their game […]

Living with Wildlife

September at Croc Valley brings warmer weather and more wildlife! As the waterholes and lagoons dry up, the animals start congregating closer to the river and we see more and more wildlife. Often that means that there will be sightings right in camp and this year we’ve had a bounty of them. Just in the past week, we had a pack of three wild dogs chasing a big male bushbuck through camp. They chased him through the river tents, through the campsite, and up the road. The buck took a turn and ran head first into the guinea fowl cage […]

August at Croc Valley

Croc Valley Camp is in full swing for the season with plenty of visitors from all over the world! After a challenging time during covid, the entire valley is breathing a sign of relief as the guests have returned and are enjoying the park again. We have had some amazing sightings – one guest even captured a video of an aardvark on a night drive! August is especially busy for us – as we welcome our returning and first time visitors. Our campsites overlooking the river have been consistently full – with overlanders, backpackers and even the big tour bus […]

Health at Croc Valley

Croc Valley Camp’s best feature is its wild surroundings, but this means it is a long way from the nearest hospital. With a bit of knowledge and good planning you can ensure you will be healthy and safe during your visit to South Luangwa National Park. The first thing to do is make sure you have good travel insurance that covers medical expenses and medical evacuation. We have cellphone reception and internet access to contact your insurance company if needed. If you take medication, make sure you bring enough for your whole stay. You should bring some basic first aid […]
